Things are “hotting” up at the Dean Heritage Centre

Fire and Wood Festival at Dean Heritage Centre

A fiery Bank Holiday weekend is in store at the Dean Heritage Centre (DHC) as its annual Fire and Wood festival returns on Saturday 28th until Monday 30th May.
This three day event at the centre is a fantastic celebration of local artisans, heritage crafts and the preservation of the traditional charcoal burn process; with an array of demonstrations and displays to delight visitors, along with the DHC charcoal burn taking place across the entire weekend.

Enjoy fire show and chainsaw carving spectacles, plus a wide range of workshops and activities, from axe throwing and circus skills to leather crafts and bug box making. Local groups including the Forest of Dean woodturners and Dean Archaeology Group will be providing demonstrations onsite, as well as the opportunity to sample and buy local ales and ciders from our ‘pop-up’ bar, whilst admiring stallholder’s crafts and wares that will be available to purchase.

The ancient charcoal burn tradition, which has taken place at the Dean Heritage Centre since 1985, will also be available for visitors to watch throughout the festival. This extremely rare demonstration of the traditional process involved is persistently monitored by a number of dedicated volunteers, who will be continually on hand to explain the methods utilised that transforms locally sourced wood into charcoal. The charcoal produced from these burns is available in the Dean Heritage Centre’s onsite gift shop; providing a locally produced, natural product that is easy to light and contains no chemicals; a more desirable and preferable option for cooking food. Nikki Davies, Marketing and Events Manager for the Dean Heritage Centre comments:
“The Fire and Wood festival is a great celebration of heritage trades and traditions. Not only does this event allow us to bring together a range of exciting entertainment for the whole family to enjoy, but provides the opportunity to showcase the skills and knowledge of members of the community; from our valued volunteers to the extraordinary talent of our local artists and performers.”

The Dean Heritage Centre is also offering an exclusive offer for visitors to continue the celebrations throughout the weekend. Those who head to the Fire and Wood festival can receive 50% off their admission ticket when returning to the event on a different day. In order to benefit from this special admission, visitors will simply need to bring along their Fire and Wood ticket receipt from either Saturday 28th or Sunday 29th May.

The Dean Heritage Centre is open from 10am until 5pm with last entry at 4pm. For more information about the festival and the full programme, visit www.deanheritagecentre.com
