Duck release at Puddleduck Corner, WWT Slimbridge
OVER 200 children will watch ducks settle into their new home at the opening of Puddleduck corner next week.
Cam Everlands’ pupils will be releasing the ducks at the opening of the new farmyard themed attraction at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre on Friday 26 March
They are special guests as they helped with the design of the exhibit which will house Indian runner ducks, khaki campbells, call ducks and rouens.
The new attraction is expected to attract many families over the Easter holidays.
Visitors will be able to get up close to the ducks at Puddleduck corner and there will also be daily talks from an expert warden.
The warden will make a special whistle to summon his ducks and he will then lead them on a parade around puddleduck corner before giving the talk.
Last month staff from WWT Slimbridge’s education team took some ducks on a visit to Cam Everlands Primary School in Dursley.
Throughout the day they did outdoor art sessions with different classes of pupils and left with beautiful drawings of ducks made by the children.
Out of these pictures four winning designs - one for each of the species of duck - have been selected and will appear on interpretation panels at Puddleduck corner.
The children who drew the pieces will take part in the opening ceremony by cutting the ribbon before releasing the ducks into their new home.
Sue Porter, learning manager at WWT Slimbridge, said: “We are delighted that the children will be coming to spend the day with us here. Sir Peter Scott our founder believed that to spread the message of conservation it is vital to engage the public.
“We hope this family friendly exhibit will appeal to everyone from the young at heart to our very youngest visitors, to help foster an interest in the living world around them from a very early age.”
