Batsford Arboretum gears up for Spectacular Autumn Colour

Autumn brings a blaze of colour to beautiful Batsford Arboretum as the tree collection takes on magnificent hues of red, gold and yellow. From early October until mid-November, you can expect a natural fireworks display of colour at the north Cotswold’s attraction, thanks to their magnificent collection of Japanese maples, Sorbus, Euonymus and cherries dotted around the 56 acre Arboretum.
Batsford’s Head Gardener, Matthew Hall says: “A wet spring, followed by above-average sunshine, have been ideal conditions for our trees to build up sugars in the leaves, which are required to produce the beautiful reds, golds and yellows we look forward to. If the dry conditions continue, we expect the colours to be at their best from mid-late October”
As well as amazing colour, visitors to Batsford – just a mile from the historic market town Moreton-in-Marsh - can soak up the smells of autumn from the collection of Katsura Trees. As the Katsura leaves begin to fall, they release a sweet aroma similar to that of caramel or candyfloss.
Planted on a hillside, the Arboretum also gives spectacular views across the tree canopy to the Evenlode Valley and Cotswolds beyond. It offers visitors a wonderful place to enjoy wonderful walks beside the meandering paths and streams.
It’s not just the Arboretum that attracts visitors in at this time of year though, many come to enjoy a home-baked lunch, afternoon tea or coffee on the deck of the Garden Terrace Café - just perfect for enjoying the autumn sun, while admiring the view of the walled garden Plant Centre - or to browse the fabulous range of gifts.
