Star-Studded World Première By Royal Appointment Comes to Cheltenham

Anne Reid Caroline Quentin By Royal Appointment at The Everyman Cheltenham

By Royal Appointment at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham

The world première of By Royal Appointment—a new play by Daisy Goodwin—arrives at the Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham this June, bringing with it an exceptional cast including Anne Reid, Caroline Quentin, James Dreyfus, and James Wilby. This exclusive stop on the UK tour invites audiences in Cheltenham to enjoy a majestic night out full of wit, emotion, and powerful performances.

Directed by former Artistic Director of Shakespeare’s Globe, Dominic Dromgoole, this brilliant new production offers a revealing and celebratory portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, focusing on the expressive power of her wardrobe. From iconic coats to statement hats, the Queen communicates in the only language protocol allows—fashion.

Acclaimed actress Anne Reid stars as the Queen. With a celebrated career spanning stage and screen, her many roles include Last Tango in Halifax, Dinnerladies, and the BAFTA-nominated film The Mother. She is joined by Caroline Quentin—famed for her television roles in Jonathan Creek and Men Behaving Badly, as well as recent appearances in Bridgerton and Doc Martin—who brings warmth and steel to the role of the Queen’s powerful Dresser.

James Dreyfus, best known for his unforgettable comedy roles in Gimme Gimme Gimme and The Thin Blue Line, plays the Milliner, while James Wilby, who starred in Maurice, Howard’s End, and Poldark, brings depth and elegance as the Queen’s Designer.

Written by acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Daisy Goodwin, best known for ITV’s Victoria, this marks her theatre debut. With design by Jonathan Fensom, lighting by Oliver Fenwick, and sound by Ella Wahlström, the production promises both visual delight and emotional resonance.

Packed with royal insight, humour, and heart, this is not just another biographical piece—it is a tribute to a monarch’s silent strength and her enduring image. Do not miss this captivating new play in the heart of Cheltenham—all part of the great What's On in Cheltenham calendar and a perfect evening of theatrical entertainment.

“She ruled in silence, but her wardrobe spoke volumes…”
