Everyman Theatre pioneers new hearing system in Cheltenham
Live theatre without limits at the Everyman Theatre
The Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham is proud to be one of the first venues in the UK to install a revolutionary hearing assistance system, designed to transform the theatre experience for audiences who are hard of hearing or visually impaired. This major technological advancement has been part-funded by a generous £10,000 grant from the Barnwood Trust.
The new assistive system harnesses Auracast™ broadcast audio technology, a state-of-the-art Bluetooth innovation that enables seamless, high-quality audio streaming directly to hearing aids, cochlear implants, earbuds and smartphones. Described as “game changing”, it allows patrons to connect as effortlessly as joining a Wi-Fi network—ushering in a new standard of inclusive theatre.
Already hosting six to seven audio-described performances each year, the Everyman Theatre continues to expand its accessibility offering. The new system will be available daily for hearing-impaired guests who need extra volume support to fully enjoy live shows. The venue remains a beacon for accessibility, offering a range of inclusive services including:
- Touch tours – Visually impaired visitors can explore the stage, props, and costumes through touch, often accompanied by a production member sharing key insights.
- Audio-described performances – Live commentary via headset describes on-stage action to blind and visually impaired guests.
- BSL interpreted performances – A British Sign Language interpreter signs the show for D/deaf audiences.
- Captioned performances – Real-time on-screen text accompanies the live script.
- Relaxed performances – Adapted for individuals with sensory conditions, with dimmed lighting, reduced sound, and a Chill Out Room available throughout.
