Contemporary Sculpture Exhibition at Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean

Back to the Cave – The Full Spectrum: Sculpture Returns to Clearwell Caves This Summer
Friday 23 May – Sunday 31 August 2025
Entry included with general Cave tickets – no separate booking required
Clearwell Caves in the Forest of Dean once again transforms into an extraordinary subterranean gallery for its much-anticipated Summer Exhibition: Back to the Cave – The Full Spectrum. Taking place from 23 May to 31 August 2025, this major art event is presented in collaboration with Gallery Pangolin, and curated by Rungwe Kingdon and Claude Koenig.
Building on the success of the inaugural sculpture showcase, this second edition draws inspiration from the ochre-rich hues of the ancient iron ore mine itself. With colour as its central theme, the exhibition offers an awe-inspiring journey deep underground through a 550-metre route, reaching depths of up to 100 feet.
Audiences will encounter dramatic sculptures in atmospheric chambers, including site-specific works created uniquely for the caves. Featuring pieces by more than fifty British and international artists, the exhibition will include names from post-war masters Lynn Chadwick, Geoffrey Clarke, and William Tucker, to leading contemporary icons such as Antony Gormley, Damien Hirst, Sarah Lucas, Polly Morgan, Tavares Strachan, Monira Al Qadiri, Ann Christopher, Merete Rasmussen, and Peter Oloya – with the full artist line-up to be revealed shortly.
“We are thrilled to welcome sculpture back underground at Clearwell Caves. The play of colour and form within the ancient ochre-stained rock creates an almost spiritual experience,” said Jonathon Wright, owner of Clearwell Caves. “This exhibition is not just an art show – it is a deep journey into both our landscape and creative imagination.”
With entry included in general cave admission, this is a must-see summer exhibition for art lovers, families, and anyone looking for a unique cultural experience in the Forest of Dean.
