From Bombs to Bellbottoms: A 50-Year Celebration at Holst Victorian House in Cheltenham

To mark an incredible milestone, Holst Victorian House will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a captivating new exhibition titled From Bombs to Bellbottoms, running from 19 July – 21 September 2025. This exciting addition to the things to do in Cheltenham calendar offers a fresh and personal look at the domestic history of the house before it became a museum.

Visitors can explore two transformed room sets from the 20th century, based on real-life former inhabitants of 4 Clarence Road. Step into a 1940s sitting room, inspired by the Doxey family, and experience wartime Cheltenham through authentic family stories and period details. Then jump to the 1970s with a recreated student bedroom, shaped by memories of fashion students from the local college – now the University of Gloucestershire.

Discover how the Garlick family modernised the house in the 1950s, with period kitchen appliances such as fridges and washing machines placed side by side with original Victorian items. A bespoke vintage-style newspaper will guide guests through these immersive spaces, offering a rich companion to the traditional Victorian Room Guide.

Also featured is 50 Years of the Museum, a display showcasing artefacts and archive material that chronicle Holst Victorian House's transformation into a beloved cultural institution.
