Sacred Earth Art Exhibition at Nature in Art

Sacred Earth Art Exhibition at Nature in Art

A remarkable new exhibition explores the elemental forces of nature through artworks created using raw earth pigments, natural inks and materials gathered directly from the landscapes that inspired them

An immersive new exhibition invites visitors to experience the power and beauty of the natural world through artistic processes that are deeply rooted in the environment. Showcasing works shaped by organic materials and traditional preparation methods, the display highlights how landscape, texture and natural colour palettes can be transformed into expressive visual storytelling.

The collection reflects a growing interest in sustainability and authenticity within contemporary art, revealing how artists are increasingly reconnecting with historic techniques and naturally sourced media. Visitors can discover how creative practices are evolving to embrace environmentally conscious approaches while still producing visually striking and emotionally resonant works.

This seasonal exhibition provides a thoughtful cultural experience for visitors seeking inspiration, creativity and a deeper appreciation of nature’s influence on artistic expression. Alongside the gallery display, guests can gain insight into the processes behind the artworks and explore the relationship between environment, materials and creative interpretation.

Sacred Earth: Water, Tree, Stone
31 March - 10 May

This is the first time a collection of work created using raw earth and rock pigments has been exhibited together, with materials carefully prepared and transformed into paints and inks by the artist.

The latest works come from Fiona McIntyre, whose artistic journey has been influenced by time spent living in Scotland, Scandinavia and Spain. She is a founding member of the Arborealists art movement and an elected associate member of the Royal Society of Painter-printmakers.

Recent years have marked a significant shift in Fiona’s creative approach, driven by research and experimentation. She now produces her own paints from mineral pigments, many of which are foraged, and gathers plants to create natural inks. By moving away from synthetic media, she has embraced the distinctive qualities and visual depth that natural materials can offer.

Sacred Earth: Water, Tree, Stone represents a deeply personal project inspired by the dramatic landscapes of Iceland, Scotland and Galicia. Themes of water, tree and stone reflect the fundamental building blocks of life and highlight environments increasingly affected by glacial melting and natural erosion.

Fiona spent extended periods sketching and drawing within these remote regions, observing glaciers, pine forests and ancient petroglyphs. Despite challenging access and unpredictable weather conditions, these immersive experiences shaped the emotional energy and atmosphere present throughout the exhibition.

Alongside the paintings and drawings, visitors can also learn about natural pigments and the traditional processes used to create paints and inks. Mineral pigments offer a distinctive translucent quality, capturing both light and a sense of place from the landscapes where they originated.

The exhibition also coincides with a special launch evening on 18 April celebrating a new book of the same name. Featuring contributions from leading art historians and curators, copies will be available to purchase in the Nature in Art shop.
