The Cherry Orchard comes to Gloucestershire this Spring
The Rococo Players bring Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard to Gloucestershire this spring with performances in Gloucester and Winchcombe
The Rococo Players, one of Gloucestershire’s most accomplished amateur theatre companies, return this spring with a vibrant new staging of Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard. Celebrated for their high quality interpretations of classic drama, the company is taking on a Russian masterpiece for the very first time in their 20-year history.
Founded in 2003, The Rococo Players began by staging open air Shakespeare productions in the enchanting Rococo Gardens at Painswick, an origin which inspired their name. Over two decades, the company has built a reputation for thoughtful, imaginative and beautifully staged performances in striking local venues. Their recent successes include Twelfth Night, Great Expectations and The Book of Will.
This year, they turn to Chekhov’s final play, a work that blends comedy, poignancy, heartbreak and social upheaval with extraordinary delicacy.
First performed in 1904, The Cherry Orchard captures a society on the edge of upheaval. At its heart is Ranyevskaya, a charming but financially ruined landowner whose beloved estate and its magnificent cherry orchard faces imminent sale. Her former protégé, Lopakhin, once a peasant boy on the estate and now a wealthy businessman, offers a solution. But will she listen?
Around them, family, friends and servants grapple with shifting fortunes, unspoken desires and the search for meaning in a rapidly changing world. Chekhov’s genius lies in his ability to make this domestic drama both deeply moving and unexpectedly funny.
The Rococo Players’ production uses Michael Frayn’s acclaimed modern translation, praised for its clarity, wit and faithfulness to the original.
