A Spectacular Season of Autumn Colour at Batsford Arboretum

A spectacular season of autumn colour at Batsford

Autumn is already beginning to make its mark at Batsford Arboretum with some of the Liquidambar, ash and Acer trees already putting on a beautiful display of golden, amber, orange and red foliage.

“Autumn is always an exciting time at Batsford because you never quite know which part of the arboretum will catch your eye next. This year, we're already seeing some wonderful colour in the Liquidambar, Acers and ash, and there is plenty more to come as different species reach their autumn peak.” says Matthew Hall, Batsford’s Head Gardener.

Following a damp start to the year and a prolonged period of dry weather, the autumn display is now beginning to build across the arboretum. With more than 60 acres of diverse planting to explore, the colour develops at different times, creating an ever-changing display throughout the season.

Vibrant Autumn Colours Across the Arboretum

The maples are among the stars of the autumn display, with Acer colours ranging from brilliant yellows and oranges to deep reds and crimsons. The Liquidambar collection is equally spectacular, with foliage that can combine dark red, crimson, purple, yellow and orange – sometimes all on the same tree.

For some of the most vivid colour, visitors should also look out for the Nyssa sylvatica - where the foliage develops through shades of yellow, orange, pink and red - while the Japanese cherries and birches offer their own seasonal displays.

Ornamental Fruits Add to the Seasonal Display

There is plenty to enjoy beyond the foliage, too. This year has produced a particularly good display of ornamental fruits, with Euonymus and Sorbus carrying colourful berries among the changing leaves, while ornamental crab apples are laden with glossy fruits in shades of pink, red, purple, yellow and orange.

With colour developing at different times across the arboretum, October offers a wonderful opportunity to explore, return and see how the season changes week by week.
