Tewkesbury Heritage and Visitor Centre wins environment award
Out of the Hat, Tewkesbury Heritage and Visitor Centre, has been awarded a Silver Award as part of the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) - narrowly missing out on the Gold Award.
The GTBS provides accreditation and encouragement for tourism businesses to reduce the environmental impact of their activities.
By encouraging sustainable practices, the scheme ensures the continued enjoyment of the environment around us for future generations.
The Silver Award recognises Tewkesbury Borough Council’s efforts to provide a sustainable centre; which reflects the importance of environmental issues in the Council Plan.
The centre was praised for encouraging the public to reuse and recycle waste; providing cotton and hessian bags instead of plastic ones; introducing a wide range of car-free activities and for transforming the tiny garden to give benefit and refuge to wildlife
The report stated: “Staff show an ongoing commitment to make the centre an example of how tourism may become more sustainable… an inspirational centre with lots of good green ideas and practical application.”
Tewkesbury Borough Council’s Lead Member for Economic Development and Promotion Cllr Phil Taylor said: “The Silver Award gives Out of the Hat the recognition it deserves.
“The team work very hard to ensure the building is as green as possible and they are always on hand to give information to visitors.
This Council is committed to maintaining and improving our Environment and this award is recognition of that resolve.”
