Tewkesbury given the green light to host a national cycling event in 2010.

Tewkesbury cycling, Tour Series 2010

The race is on in Tewkesbury

Tewkesbury has officially been given the green light to host a national cycling event in 2010.

The Tour Series began this year and saw thousands of visitors flock to 10 English towns and cities for a one-day professional cycling race - and next year it will head to Tewkesbury.

The town will host the cyclists on Tuesday, 1 June 2010, which falls in the schools’ half term.

The 2009 Tour Series has been hailed a resounding success by organisers, venues and racing teams after attendances were in excess of 100,000 and thanks to 10 one-hour TV shows on ITV4, the event reached an estimated 40 million people in the UK.

Portfolio Holder for Economic Development and Promotion, Cllr Phil Taylor said: “This is a great chance for us to showcase everything the Borough has to offer on a national stage – there will be huge publicity and it will bring so many visitors to the area, which will give a boost our local economy.

“I hope that, with national media coverage involved, both local and not so local businesses and organisations will get on board and sponsor the event – it’s a brilliant opportunity and I’m confident that this will bring out the best that the Borough has to offer.

“There’s going to be a huge amount going on aside from the professional cycling including events for children; opportunities for local teams to compete; family fun; opportunities to meet elite athletes; demonstrations and much, much more.”

Craig Brophy, Tour Organiser, added: “Tewkesbury is an excellent cycling town, so as a venue for the Tour Series it couldn’t be better.

“The fact that the area is one of the nine Government-backed Healthy Towns means the event will be really well placed.

“All events are extremely well attended and receive national television coverage so it will really benefit Tewkesbury’s tourism.”
