BBC History Festival at Gloucester Cathedral - 28 August 2010

Gloucester will host a day-long celebration of British heritage this month when the BBC History Festival comes to the city. The free public event on Saturday 28th August 2010 will cover all eras from 1066 to the 20th century and will include re-enactors, archive film shows, talks, heritage walks, living history displays and a host of children's activities.
The History Festival runs from 10am until 4pm at the Cathedral and other locations in the city including Gloucester Guildhall, the Folk Museum and the City Museum & Art Gallery and St Michael's Tower.
Event organiser Trish Campbell from BBC Learning said; "This is a great opportunity for people of all ages to learn about the Cathedral's Norman origins, discover why Gloucester was the birthplace of the Domesday Book and even walk in the footsteps of William the Conqueror".
Actors and experts will be appearing in costume as Romans, Normans, Plantagenets, Stuarts and Victorians in the cathedral grounds. A children's treasure trail will take young history buffs from the cathedral to the Folk and City Museums on a time-travelling adventure. Gloucestershire Archives, the local Family History Society and the county's archaeology service will be offering advice and information to people wanting to delve deeper into the past.
The Cathedral Cloisters will be home to an array of local history exhibitions and heritage displays. Meanwhile the Chapter House will be transformed into a radio theatre as visitors are invited to create sound effects and show off their acting skills in a specially created BBC drama.
The event is being staged by the BBC in partnership with Gloucester City Council and other organisations such as the Dean and Chapter of Gloucester Cathedral, the County Council, Gloucester Civic Trust and many local history groups and societies.
The Festival will help launch BBC Hands On History, a two-year learning campaign offering people inspiration to take the next step from watching TV programmes to discovering history around them. Hands On History begins this Summer with the Norman Season on BBC Two and BBC Four and it includes a range of events and activities including the History Festival at Gloucester.
