An exciting year ahead at Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway

We were invited along to the Gloucester Warwickshire Railway for a special morning to see what the award winning heritage Cotswold line has on offer during the forthcoming year.
The railway has overcome landslides and raised over 1million pounds to restore the line with future plans to extend the line to Broadway and then to Honeybourne. Over 700 enthusiastic volunteers run the railway and they presented us with a fantastic programme of events for the forthcoming year that will delight all ages. We were welcomed into the charming Whistle and Flag tearoom by characters dressed in immaculate wartime apparel to promote a new event on 27 & 28 April ‘Wartime in the Cotswolds’. Future events also include:
- 1 April - Easter Eggspress
- 18 - 19 May – Steam & Real Ale Weekend
- 24- 27 May – Cotswold Steam Celebration Gala
- 16 June & 15 Sept – Classic Vehicle Days
- 22 - 23 June & 21 -22 Sept – Day out With Thomas
- 29 – 30 June – Back to the Sixties
14 July – Bus Rally - August – Scenic Rail cruises
- 14 – 15 Sept – Autumn Steam & Real Ale Weekend
- 26 October – Steam & Scream
- from 30 Nov – Santa specials

Elegant dining experiences Fish & Chip specials Musical evenings. We were also treated to a scenic trip along the line on a steam train to Cheltenham Racecourse where we were able to enjoy the nostalgic sights, sounds and smells of a bygone era (and even a coffee from the buffet carriage). They just don’t make them like this anymore. At Cheltenham we were able to take a look at the engine before our return journey to Toddington. Then it was over the track to board our heritage diesel train that would take us to Laverton and back. A completely different experience but one where you are able to actually see the track from behind the driver. Children in particular relish comparing the two trains.
An incredible amount of work and preparation has gone into preparing the railway for the year ahead. The railway is keen to emphasize that you really can spend a whole day there and that it does represent good value for money. This year there will be more activities at the stations with children’s quizzes and a new heritage trail. The trains can also now accommodate up to 4 wheelchairs. The volunteers at Gloucestershire Warwickshire Railway are passionate about the railway and all are happy to chat and help you enjoy your day out. Their aim is for us all to enjoy and maintain this part of our heritage for many years to come.
