Nailsworth

Nailsworth lies in one of the Stroud Valleys, in the south Cotswolds, approximately four miles south of Stroud on the A46 road to Bath.

Nailsworth, once an important Cotswold mill town, is now a charming, small town with around 6,600 people, serving the nearby villages and hamlets.

Nailsworth is also renowned for having the most working water wheels per square mile in England. Ruskin Mill is a fine example of one of Nailsworth’s mills – now a popular centre for artistic activities and education – it also has picturesque organic water gardens to enjoy

In recent years Nailsworth has become a unique shopping destination with numerous speciality, gift and books shops. Many are family run, as are the supply shops such as butchers, delicatessen, fishmonger and bakers – the latter includes Hobbs House Bakery, owned by the ‘Fabulous Baker Boys’ of TV fame. All shops maintain great emphasis on using local and organic food, produce and materials.

Nailsworth boasts a fine selection of pubs, cafes and restaurant including the charming Egypt Mill, which overlooks the river and provides fine accommodation. There are also many other guest houses and B&B’s nearby in the area which make great bases while exploring the town and Cotswolds.

Nailsworth is a great place to explore the Cotswolds. There are numerous walks and footpaths to walk along the valleys and over the rolling Cotswold Hills – it’s a real gem for ramblers visiting Gloucestershire. The walks vary in difficulty to suit everyone. Cyclists are not left out with a wonderful eight-mile, flat cycle path that winds its way along the old railway line to Stonehouse. This is a great opportunity to appreciate the many mills, industrial heritage and stunning scenery too.

Nestled just outside Nailworth is the magnificent (and some say haunted) Woodchester Mansion and its beautiful lake. Other fine Cotswold buildings nearby are Owlpen Manor and Newark Park. Heading about eight miles south of Nailsworth, near Tetbury is Westonbirt Arboretum – an inspirational location and popular tourist attraction famous for its huge arboreal collection and wonderful, seasonal colour – look our for Westonbirt’s summer concerts – a fabulous setting for big name musical treats!

Whether your passion is shopping, walking, cycling, historical studies or simply the appreciation of another unspoilt Cotswold town to discover, then Nailsworth is a must-place to visit, either for a day, week or even longer.
