Birdland Park & Gardens

About Birdland Park & Gardens

Birdland was first established in 1957 and was sited in the centre of Bourton. It moved to its present site, a few hundred metres down the road in 1989. The current location was a trout farm and a Poplar plantation, for match stick production, owned by Bryant and May. There are still over 150 trees which create a high canopy for the River Windrush and enclosures.

Birdland is set in woodland, river and gardens. This natural setting is inhabited by over 500 birds; Flamingos, pelicans, penguins, cranes, storks, cassowary and waterfowl can be seen on various aspects of the water habitat. Over 50 aviaries of parrots, falcons, pheasants, hornbills, toucans, touracos, pigeons, ibis and many more. The Tropical, Toucan and Desert Houses are home to the more delicate species.

Take time out to wander, relax and learn in this tranquil environment. There are large areas to picnic and watch the activities of the birds on and around the river Windrush as it meanders through the Park on its journey to the Thames.

The Jurassic Journey

Calling all Dinosaur Hunters, Fossil Fanatics and Potential Palaeontologists!

Opened in May 2015 visitors to Birdland can travel back to when dinosaurs roamed the Cotswolds, more than 65 million years ago and embark on a fascinating expedition discovering life-size dinosaurs.

Track Brachiosaurus, Spinosaurus, Postosuchus, Velociraptors in the Jurassic Journey trail. Explorers will be armed with special dinosaur tracker kits, and will venture in to a Jurassic-themed landscape which is home to more than 30 different dinosaurs ranging from a metre-long baby stegosaurus to a 5 metre tall brachiosaurus.

Visitors will also be able to spot giant dinosaur eggs along with complete dinosaur skeletons. As well as providing an exciting new attraction for visitors, the ‘Jurassic Journey’ trail is also a reminder that today’s bird species are directly descended from dinosaurs. Other species to look out for are the spectacular flying Pteranodon, Allosaurus, and the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex.

Along the trail visitors can search for fossils in the Dino Dig where there activity tables are available to learn more about dinosaurs.

Leaving the trail visitors will meet Birdland’s ratites, prehistoric-looking birds, and will be able to spot the similarities between the live birds and the dinosaurs.

The Jurassic Journey is perfect for all the family to have fun and learn about our prehistoric past.

The Discovery Zone is an area dedicated to giving more of an insight into the life of birds with two exhibitions 'What is a Bird?' and 'The Egg Connection', as well as reptiles and insects on display. Within the Discovery Zone is Trigg Hall - a purpose built room for school eduction visits and conferences for businesses.
