Painswick is the "Queen of the Cotswolds", a charming Cotswold village which lies between Cheltenham and Stroud on the A46.

Painswick boasts a wealth of charismatic Cotswold stone buildings, some of which are very grand as when they were built, Painswick was a flourishing village at the height of the Cotswold wool trade in years gone by.

In the centre of the village is St Mary's church, dating back to the 11th century. The church is famous for its 99 yew trees, which lies within the churchyard. Apparently the rumour was the Devil would not allow the growing of the 100th tree, although when Explore Gloucestershire were there we were told that the figure now stands at 106 after recent planting! Each September the traditional Clypping service takes place within the churchyard, whereby the parishioners hold hands and encircle the church.

Just outside Painswick is the wonderful Painswick Rococo Gardens, famous for its snowdrops in January and February, with beautiful spring and summer floral displays set within an exquisite landscaped gardens.

Painswick as a village comes complete with numerous shops including antiques, arts, crafts, gifts, bookshops and an art gallery. There's also a bank, post office, library, chemist and medical centre as well as a few pubs and hotels.
