Traditional Charcoal Burn at the Dean Heritage Centre

Saturday 3 - Monday 5 May 2025

Experience the Annual Traditional Charcoal Burn at Dean Heritage Centre over the first bank holiday weekend in May. As one of the few places in the country still using the traditional turf and earth kiln method, this is a unique opportunity to witness an ancient craft in action.

The team will begin constructing the charcoal burn on Saturday morning, with the fire being lit at midday. By Monday midday, the charcoal will be ready to harvest, showcasing the full process of this time-honoured tradition. It will be sold in the gift shop in the following weeks.

Charcoal Burn Schedule

  • Saturday
    10:00-12:00 - Building the stack
13:00 - Light the stack - then burn begins
  • Sunday
    10:00-17:00 - All Day Burn
The Stack is quenched/put out overnight and left to cool
  • Monday
    10:00-12:00 - Harvest the charcoal

While visiting, don’t miss The Gruffalo Trail, a magical woodland walk inspired by the beloved children’s book. Open all year round, this enchanting five-acre trail brings The Gruffalo to life as visitors follow the journey of the famous mouse through the woods, encountering his well-known friends along the way.
