Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening at The Roses Theatre
Sunday 8 March 2026
Together, these dazzling musicians create musical magic through a dynamic and unique sound described as “Ancient Northumbrian Futurism”. Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening take their name from an old Northumbrian word for twilight, reflecting music that sits between past and future.
The group is made up of four North East England-based members: Kathryn Tickell (Northumbrian smallpipes, fiddle, vocals), Amy Thatcher (accordion, synth, clogs, vocals), Tim Bloomer (guitar) and Joe Truswell (drums, percussion), alongside Stef Conner from Cambridge on vocals and lyres.
Based in the shadow of Hadrian’s Wall yet reaching out to the wider world, Kathryn Tickell & The Darkening explore the connecting threads of music, landscape and people across almost 2,000 years. Songs move between themes of freedom, nature and emerging from times of darkness, to ancient Roman inscriptions with links to Libya and Syria, all powerfully reimagined for the 21st century with glorious vocal harmonies and exhilarating piping.
The Roses offers a wide variety of performances, including fantastic tribute acts and stage show musicals. A great night out at the theatre awaits at The Roses, Tewkesbury’s favourite entertainment venue.
