Pirates Invade the Dean Heritage Centre


On Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th September the Dean Heritage Centre will be celebrating life on the Seven Seas with a fun-packed Pirate Weekend.

Visitors will be able to unleash their inner buccaneer and live like a pirate for the day with a pirate trail,facepainting, pirate naming, craft activities and much more. The weekend is an opportunity to learn all about the Forest of Dean’s local pirate Captain Morgan, and take part in his treasure hunt and outdoor challenges.

Challenges include: Walk the Plank, Pieces of Eight, The Spider’s Web & The Cargo net. Do you have what it takes to become pirate for the day?

Harri Le Claire. PR and Event manager at the centre said: ‘The weekend should be a real spectacle, We have indoor and outdoor activities suitable for pirates of all ages.’

The Dean Heritage Centre is also pleased to welcome the Forest Musical Society who will be show-casing scenes from their upcoming show of Gilbert & Sullivan’s ‘Pirates of Penzance’. The cast will be performing from 2:30pm on Sunday in full costume so prepare to see colourful pirates, policemen in full song. The company will be selling tickets for their shows that take place at Lydney Town Hall in October.

Peter Silsby, chairman of the Forest Musical Society said: ‘We will be arriving fresh from our rehearsal and look forward to performing for visitors at the Dean heritage Centre’

Visitors are encouraged to turn up in costume and the best dressed pirates throughout the weekend could win a prize.

The Dean Heritage Centre has lots to see and do including 5 onsite galleries exploring the history of the Forest from the Ice Age to the present day; a reconstructed Victorian cottage; a charcoal burner’s camp; an adventure playground; a chainsaw carving demonstration pitch; a variety of animals and an onsite gift shop
so there is always something new and exciting to interest and inspire visitors.
