New Ivor Gurney stained glass window installed at Gloucester Cathedral
A stunning new stained glass window commemorating the life of famous Gloucestershire poet and composer, Ivor Gurney has been installed in the Cathedral’s 15th Century Lady Chapel.
The window, installed in February, was designed and made by stained-glass artist, Tom Denny. Each of the eight window lights draws inspiration from a Gurney poem, reflecting his troubled life as a young man in Gloucestershire, through the terrors of war and his own despair, to some eventual hope. Several of the lights were inspired by the Gloucestershire countryside which he loved and about which he wrote.
Funds for the window were raised from ticket sales to a special Gurney music festival spearheaded by celebrated Opera Singer, Sarah Connolly, and a generous contribution from the Hartnett Conservation Trust.
A special dedication will be held in the Cathedral at Evensong on Wednesday the 30th April at 5.30pm.
The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester said, ‘We are delighted that Tom has created such a wonderful new window in memory of one of Gloucestershire’s most beloved sons. It is a fitting tribute to all who served during the Great War and everyone is welcome to come and see this very special piece of craftsmanship.’
