Tweedy Helps Launch Everyman’s £1m Grove Street Fundraiser

Tweedy the Clown Kicks Off £1m Grove Street Appeal With a Smashing Start

Tweedy the Clown was seen crashing through walls this week to launch the Everyman Theatre’s £1 million Grove Street Appeal, which aims to transform an existing facility in Grove Street, West Cheltenham, into the new Everyman Education Centre, opening in Spring 2026.

The building will undergo a complete refurbishment, creating a vibrant community hub. The Everyman’s beloved pantomime star lent his unique skills to the cause, “helping” with demolition by knocking down a wall in his inimitable style.

The Everyman Theatre’s award-winning Education and Community team works with more than 22,000 people annually, running projects that promote creativity, improve mental health and enhance wellbeing. As a registered charity, the Everyman reinvests its profits into expanding this vital outreach work. The new centre will open the doors to even more life-changing opportunities, particularly for under-served groups.

Mark Goucher, CEO of the Everyman Theatre, said: “We know the impact we bring to people’s lives through creative arts but we need the public’s help to raise £1 million to allow us to redevelop the existing building in Grove Street into a community asset we can all enjoy. Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to realising our vision and with your support, we can create a centre of artistic excellence, which will inspire and empower for generations to come.”

Currently, space within the busy theatre is limited and access to services can be challenging for those facing geographical, social, cultural, or financial barriers. The new centre will overcome these issues, offering a centrally located and welcoming environment in the heart of Cheltenham.

Cheltenham is a town of contrasts, with significant disparities in health, wealth, and opportunities. By expanding its services through the Grove Street project, the Everyman will provide a stronger focus on delivering creative arts programmes that reach less advantaged communities.

The theatre has already invested more than £300,000 – including the purchase of the building – and the newly launched campaign aims to raise a further £1 million to turn the vision into reality.
