Burford

Often referred to as ‘the gateway to the Cotswolds’ Burford is situated on the River Windrush.

This mediaeval market town was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. Over the years Burford flourished as it enjoyed a good position on the north/south and east/west crossroads. The introduction of the railways caused a decline in the trade in Burford as the town was by-passed in favour of Charlbury. It was only with the arrival of the car that Burford was put back on the map as a place to visit.

Burford is popular with visitors for its history, exclusive shops, specially antiques, and for its selection of eateries which cater for all tastes. Here you can visit Antiques at The George which was previously a coaching inn frequented by King Charles and his mistress Nell Gwynn. Dine at The Bull where Nelson dined or visit England’s oldest pharmacy, Reavley’s,which first opened in1734.

The 16th century Tolsey building was once a meeting place for medieval merchants. Today it is a museum which holds a fascinating insight in to Burford’s industrial past.

A popular attraction in Burford is the St. John the Baptist Church. With over 100,000 visitors annually this Grade I church is one of the top 10 visited churches in the country. In 1649 three members of The Levellers were controversially executed on the orders of Cromwell and buried in the Churchyard. The Levellers were a group of radical thinkers who challenged parliament during the Civil War. Since 1975, Levellers' Day has been held in the town  to commemorate the three Levellers executed there. It’s a day of political debate, radical history, song and music with high profile speakers, historians, entertainers and family fun. A different theme is chosen for each Levellers' Day, which is held on the Saturday nearest to 17 May.

Very near to Burford you will find the very popular Cotswold Wildlife Park which is one of the Cotswolds oldest established tourist attractions and a great day out for the whole family.
