Winchcombe

Winchcombe is surrounded by historical and natural treasures. Nearby lies Sudeley Castle & Gardens, an exquisite estate steeped in royal history, famous for its award-winning gardens and as the resting place of Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s wives.

Situated along the 102-mile Cotswold Way, Winchcombe is an ideal place to join the trail or stay in one of the traditional Cotswold inns, pubs, or hotels that recall the old days of travel. The route offers scenic stretches through rolling countryside, woodlands, and ancient villages. Just outside the town, the atmospheric ruins of Hailes Abbey invite visitors to step into centuries of monastic history.

Gothic Guardians & Steam Journeys

For railway enthusiasts, the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway offers a nostalgic journey through the Cotswold countryside, with Winchcombe acting as the central station between Cheltenham and Broadway. Local heritage continues at Winchcombe Museum, home to the remarkable Winchcombe Meteorite discovered in 2021.

Winchcombe itself is rich in character, with whimsical architecture and the striking stone gargoyles of St Mary’s Church, each carved with dramatic medieval detail. The town offers independent cafés, shops, and galleries, making it a welcoming stop for walkers, culture-seekers, and day-trippers alike. Seasonal highlights include the much-loved Spectacle of Light at Sudeley Castle every December.
