Chipping Sodbury
Chipping Sodbury is a charming and historic market town in the South Cotswolds, full of traditional character and local pride. Its name comes from the Old English words for “market” (Chipping) and “Sodbury,” meaning “stronghold.” Founded in the 12th century, the town flourished under landowner William Crassus, who was granted a royal charter to hold markets. The town soon became known for its weaving and leather trades, and the unusually wide High Street still reflects its bustling market past.
Over the centuries, Chipping Sodbury grew into a lively hub for fairs and celebrations. The annual St John the Baptist Fair on June 24th and the historic Mop Fairs continue to this day, now celebrated as community festivals rather than hiring events. Modern Chipping Sodbury offers a wonderful blend of heritage and hospitality, with independent boutiques, cafés and local events making it a highlight on the South Cotswold trail.
