Severn Bore Wave Rating – Understanding the Star System

The Severn Bore is a unique tidal phenomenon, but not every bore is the same. The star rating system helps spectators and surfers determine how impressive a bore is likely to be.

1-Star Bore – Minor & Weak

  • Small, barely noticeable tidal surge.
  • Minimal impact on river conditions.
  • Not ideal for spectators or surfers.

★★ 2-Star Bore – Modest Movement

  • A more defined wave but still relatively weak.
  • Sometimes surfable, but not particularly exciting.

★★★ 3-Star Bore – Moderate & Enjoyable

  • A visible and well-formed wave, 0.5 to 1 metre high.
  • A good spectacle for first-time viewers.
  • Offers decent surfing conditions for experienced riders.

★★★★ 4-Star Bore – Large & Thrilling

  • A powerful wave, 1 to 1.5 metres high.
  • Attracts large crowds due to its spectacle.
  • A fantastic challenge for bore surfers and photographers.

★★★★★ 5-Star Bore – Rare & Spectacular

  • A huge wave, often exceeding 2 metres.
  • Produces a deep roaring sound as it moves upriver.
  • The most exhilarating experience for both spectators and surfers.

What Affects the Severn Bore’s Size?

Several factors influence how big and powerful the Severn Bore will be:

Tidal Range – The higher the tide, the bigger the bore.
Weather Conditions – Following winds increase height, while opposing winds and high river levels can weaken it.
River Shape – The narrowing of the River Severn amplifies the wave.
