Slimbridge Wetland Centre has been awarded a VisitEngland Gold Accolade for 2021-2022, the highest quality award available to attractions in England. The accolade is only awarded to a small percentage of venues each year, as part of the Visitor Attraction Quality Scheme and is testament to the continued high standards achieved at the wetland centre.

VisitEngland’s Accolades are designed to celebrate excellence within the visitor attraction sector and showcase those businesses that go the extra mile to provide a high-quality day out. This could be through a warm welcome, an engaging story, a delicious lunch or the overall visitor experience. Accolades are given for the following categories: Welcome, Best Told Story, Quality Food & Drink, Hidden Gem and Gold.

Slimbridge gained the gold accolade based on the score received in the annual VisitEngland Visitor Attraction Quality Scheme assessment earlier in the year, for which Slimbridge scored 97%. This was an improvement on the wetland centre’s previous high scores, with a 1% increase from the 2021 assessment.

VisitEngland were highly impressed by Slimbridge’s staff and volunteers who were extremely engaging, along with the overall offer and general presentation of the wetland centre. VisitEngland felt that Slimbridge continues to successfully mix an important educational message about our natural world, with entertainment for all ages.

Slimbridge Visitor Experience Manager, Fran Penny, explained:
"We’re delighted to have won the VisitEngland Gold Accolade and to have improved on last year’s score - a testimony to the enthusiasm, hard work and commitment of our staff and volunteers - as well as our wonderful wildlife.
We look forward to maintaining this high level of visitor experience, especially with new additions to the centre coming soon – including a Changing Places and revamped Welly Boot Land.”
