The Cafe Rene Experience - Food Review (Archive Feature)
This review was originally published in October 2007, capturing the atmosphere and dining experience at Café Rene in Gloucester city centre at the time.
After a meeting in Gloucester, Explore Gloucestershire discovered Café Rene tucked away down one of the old alleyways in Greyfriars. From the outside it appears modest, but inside visitors find a characterful traditional pub with beer barrels and beamed ceilings. The welcoming staff and relaxed atmosphere have long been part of its charm.
The lunchtime menu catered for a wide range of tastes. At the time, chef Ian Smith had built a reputation for serving quality food from a tried and tested menu. Dishes enjoyed included a generous cheddar ploughman's and a Caribbean curried lamb with rice and gungo peas, both praised for flavour and presentation.
The food at Café Rene was described as excellent value for money, making it a popular choice for lunch during shopping trips in Gloucester or for an evening meal in the restaurant.
"We do not serve fast food. We serve good food as fast as we can!"
Café Rene has long hosted events throughout the year, including live music and seasonal celebrations, helping establish its reputation as one of Gloucester’s best known independent venues.
