Tewkesbury is famous for its alleyways - of which 30 remain from the
original 90. These alleys weave between streets and houses and show you
how the town has changed over the years. Tewkesbury was the site of the
decisive War of the Roses and the town is proud of its place in
history. Tewkesbury has something to offer everyone, be it a river
cruise or leisurely walk; fine dining in many of the cafes, bistros or
pubs, excellent shopping at a range of exquisite independent shops or
first rate accommodation at a variety of places to suit your needs.

A new edition to the town, Out of the Hat – Tewkesbury Heritage and
Visitor Centre, celebrates the rich heritage of Tewkesbury. A
fabulously restored Grade II* 16th century building, it now houses the
town’s Tourist Information Centre on the ground floor and two upper
storeys packed to the rafters with information and things to do.
Innovative and modern personal media players, guide you around the
exhibition space and introduce you to Bartholomew Read, a 17th century
glove maker who tells you all about his former home. Children will
delight in the many interactive displays and fun games on offer. Out of
the Hat is a great introduction to the town of Tewkesbury and is the
ideal place to start your visit. The centre is fully accessible to all
with lifts over the three floors, tactile elements and friendly helpful
staff.

Tewkesbury Abbey
|
Along with Out of the Hat, Tewkesbury has three other main attractions. The jewel in the crown is Tewkesbury Abbey with its Norman tower, the largest surviving one in the world. The Abbey is a dominant presence over the town and will captivate you with its elegance and beautiful features. The John Moore Countryside Museum is contained within a terrace of beautiful 15th century timber-framed cottages. The museum is dedicated to the conservationist John Moore and is set over three floors. Tewkesbury Town Museum celebrates the towns’ rich and diverse heritage in one of Tewkesbury’s classic Tudor buildings. Special events are held at all the attractions throughout the year.

Tewkesbury festivals
|
Tewkesbury holds a wealth of festivals throughout the year. May sees
the arrival of two festivals; Food and Drink and Awaken your Senses.
Taking place at either end of the month these festivals involve the
town and really are a treat not to be missed. The Food and Drink
festival showcases local and regional fayre from sausages and chocolate
to wines and beers. Awaken your Senses is a delight for the town with
many different types of music, dance, theatre and exhibitions taking
place at various venues. The Medieval Festival takes place in July on
and around the “bloody meadow”, the site of the infamous Battle of
Tewkesbury. An atmospheric festival with re-enactments, traditional
food, dancing and singing. September is a celebration of our rivers and
watery heritage with the Water Festival taking place, and October sees
the traditional Mop Fair take over the main streets for two days. Like
all areas, Tewkesbury too has its own Christmas Lights Festival which
enlightens the town in November giving the buildings a wonderfully
festive feel.
As well as attractions and exciting festivals, Tewkesbury has a wealth
of independent shops. New Beginnings, In Stark Contrast and Pretty
Special are some such shops. Providing a variety of beautiful clothing
and accessories – from adults to children, these shops are amongst the
towns retailing jewels. Along with our retailers there are some great
places to eat including the Gupshill Manor; the Aubergine Bistro; the
Abbey Tea Rooms; the Nottingham Arms pub and Melanie’s Cafe. We can
also tempt you to come and live here with the help of one of our
professional estate agents. Chess Moves provides property management
for the area with friendly helpful staff who’ll assess your needs and
help find the right home for you.
