Cheese Rolling in Gloucestershire | Mayhem at Cooper's Hill!

Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling is without doubt one of the most famous – and bizarre – traditional events in Gloucestershire, if not the world!

Taking place every spring on Cooper’s Hill near Brockworth, this centuries-old custom sees competitors launching themselves down a perilously steep slope in pursuit of a 9lb wheel of Double Gloucester cheese.

The event, believed to date back to at least the 1800s (and quite possibly much earlier), is equal parts tradition, adrenaline, and madness. Runners hurtle, tumble, and bounce their way downhill, cheered on by hundreds of spectators who line the edges of the hill. The first person to reach the bottom – or whatever’s left of them – wins the cheese.

Despite its chaotic nature, or perhaps because of it, the event has gained international fame, attracting brave participants from across the globe. Media from around the world descend on the hill each year to capture the glorious lunacy.

It is a highlight of the Gloucestershire calendar, showcasing a unique blend of local tradition, community spirit, and fearless fun. Whether watching or (foolishly) taking part, the Cheese Rolling is a must-see spectacle that reflects the quirky charm of Gloucestershire’s cultural heritage.
