Football in the River at Bourton-on-the-Water

A Splashing Summer Tradition in the Cotswolds

Held every August Bank Holiday Monday, Football in the River is one of the most unusual and iconic events in the Cotswolds. Taking place in the centre of Bourton-on-the-Water, two local teams take to the River Windrush for a fiercely fought football match played in the water!

This much-loved tradition has drawn thousands of spectators each year, lining the riverbanks to cheer on the action and soak up the spectacle. Expect splashes, tackles, goals, and good humour – all in the shallow waters of one of the prettiest villages in the Cotswolds.

A favourite with visitors and locals alike, the event is family-friendly and entirely free to watch. The surrounding village is full of charm, with tea rooms, shops, and attractions to explore throughout the day.

Football in the River is one of the quirkiest highlights of summer in Gloucestershire – and a must-see for anyone looking to experience something truly unique.
