Come and join the conversation…

Gloucester Cathedral is delighted to announce the very first Wordfest which will take place this summer from Friday 6 July to Sunday 8 July. A three-day celebration of the written, spoken and sung word Wordfest will include talks, poetry, music, comedy, storytelling, crafts and much more...

There is a fantastic lineup of artists, from authors to activists, musicians to comedians, featuring talent both from Gloucestershire and further afield. With names like Dan Cruickshank, Rachel Joyce, Johnny Coppin and Helen Pankhurst we are expecting a fascinating and stimulating weekend.

Lower College Green will be transformed into a festival village, and as well as our festival marquees, our newly restored Lady Chapel will be used for some of the events.

Enjoy a programme bursting with free family and community events including live music, games, workshops and top-class buskers - there really is something to entertain everyone.

Throughout the weekend, Waterstones will be running an onsite bookshop, and Gloucester Brewery will be serving up their ales alongside wines and soft drinks. On Saturday and Sunday you can tempt your tastebuds with some amazing street food.

The Very Reverend Stephen Lake, Dean of Gloucester said: “We are very excited about Wordfest and look forward to welcoming speakers and performers, as well as visitors and members of our local community, to our beautiful Cathedral spaces.”

Wordfest is being staged with the generous support of Gloucester Quays. Matt Bird, Centre Manager said: “We’re proud to support the very first Gloucester Cathedral Wordfest; with such a varied line-up it is sure to attract a wide range of ages for a weekend of entertainment with a difference. Events such as Wordfest help to bring our community together, boost Gloucester’s economy and also encourage people from other parts of the UK and beyond to enjoy all we have to offer in the city.’

The weekend also forms the opening event of the SoMAC programme of events. Jason Smith, Chief Executive of Marketing Gloucester said: “It is so exciting that Gloucester’s Summer of Music, Arts and Culture (SoMAC) is opening with Wordfest. Having seen the brilliant line up, I’m sure that it is going to be a must-do event in the summer calendar.”

Tickets are on sale now from the Cathedral box office and will also be available throughout the Wordfest weekend at our pop-up box office at the Cathedral.

Full details of the Wordfest programme can be found in the Gloucester Cathedral What’s On Guide and online at www.gloucestercathedral.org.uk
