Gloucester Cathedral Wins AHI 2019 Discover Heritage Award
Gloucester Cathedral is delighted to announce that it has won the Historic Properties/Sites category at this year’s Association of Heritage Interpretation Awards.
The biennial AHI Awards scheme recognises and rewards the best practice in heritage interpretation across the UK and Ireland and are the only awards to recognise excellence in all types and sizes of heritage interpretation, whether held in museums, historic buildings, visitor centres or any type of outdoor location.
The Cathedral won the award for its new and multi-faceted approach to interpretation, which combines stone carved sculpture, audio-visual projections, augmented reality and an interactive gallery. The scheme was developed in partnership with interpretation design specialists Imagemakers as part of Project Pilgrim Phase One, an ambitious project supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to conserve and enhance key parts of the Cathedral site for visitors.
Aiming to bring the Cathedral’s heritage to life for a wide range of audiences, the interpretation includes an App and a Virtual Tour which gives visitors digital access to the areas of the building that do not have level access, including the Crypt and Medieval Library.

Everyone involved in the project worked extremely hard and the result has been nothing short of extraordinary - it is wonderful that this has been recognised with such a prestigious award.”

“This is one of the most complex and multifaceted projects we have been involved with, and is the result of years of consultation, planning, design, testing and evaluation. We are delighted and honoured that the Cathedral’s interpretation has been recognised with this award.”
The Cathedral was nominated alongside other heritage sites throughout the UK and Ireland.
