Nature Inspires Art at Slimbridge
Artists inspired by the nature and wildlife at Slimbridge Wildfowl
and Wetland Trust will showcase their latest work at a special
exhibition in the centre’s gallery.
The exhibition
entitled Inspired by Nature includes pieces from Romaine Dennistoun, an
artist who draws directly from life, Caro Brownhill, who encourages
conservation through her life-long passion for painting animals and
birds, and Liam and Neil Dalrymple who both create ceramic and
stoneware sculptures inspired by wildlife and freshwater habitat.
A
launch of this exciting new exhibit will take place on Sunday November
9th from 2-4pm where visitors can peruse, speak directly with the
artists about their work and purchase the pieces on show.
Romaine
has spent many afternoons drawing at Slimbridge over the past year and
is inspired by what she sees. She said: “It’s closeness to the estuary
lends it a particular light. Slimbridge for me is wide skies, dark
water and a swan's white wings. It is also a place of peace.” Romaine
studied fine art at St Martin’s School of Art in London as well as in
two Italian studios in Florence and Pietrasanta. However it wasn’t
until later in her career that she returned to her first love - drawing
animals and wildlife. She said: “I think this exhibition will reflect
my blossoming interest in birds. Before this I concentrated on mammals,
especially big cats, but the pieces I will show here will include birds
from the London Wetlands Centre in Barnes to the owls at the Hawk
Conservancy in Hampshire and of course the waterfowl at Slimbridge.”
During
an art course at London Zoo run by David Boys, a former teacher at the
Royal College of Art, Romaine met Caro Brownhill, a self-taught artist
who shared Romaine’s passion for wildlife.
Caro said: “I love
spending time at Slimbridge and I especially enjoy being in the
tropical house observing the Madagascan Teals. I like, where possible,
to raise awareness through my art. My hope in painting is that perhaps
an animal or bird will be noticed just a little more and someone will
look twice at a previously overlooked species. How exciting, invariably
beautiful and life-enriching they are and how lucky we are to have
them. It is vital for us to do our utmost to protect them and their
habitats.”
