The Wilson wins two further architecture awards

The Wilson, Cheltenham’s art gallery and museum, continues to go from strength to strength and has again been formally recognised for its elegant and striking new building.

Its two latest awards were announced last night (Thursday 8 May) at the prestigious RIBA South West Awards Ceremonies. RIBA awards recognise examples of innovative and outstanding new architecture.

Jane Lillystone, museum, art and tourism manager, won RIBA client of the year award for Cheltenham Borough Council; whilst The Wilson and architects Berman Guedes Stretton who designed the new building, won the RIBA South West 2014 award.

Jane Lillystone, museum, art and tourism manager for The Wilson, Cheltenham Borough Council, says: “We’re really excited and delighted to receive this award. This is an outstanding acknowledgement of all the hard work achieved on this significant project by the architects, design team, planners, funding organisations and other supporters.”

Gary Collins, director at Berman Guedes Stretton, continues: “I’m sure it is on every architect’s wish list to design an art gallery. For us to be given the opportunity to realise this dream is a delight. To have won the opportunity in a competition is incredibly special and then for that design to be acknowledged with an RIBA regional award is truly amazing.

“None of this could have happened without the inspiring support of our client, Jane Lillystone and we are delighted that she has received an RIBA Award in recognition of her unstinting passion for the project.”

The Wilson has also been nominated in the RICS South West Awards, the ceremony for this is on Thursday 15 May.
In addition, the art gallery and museum has received a local award from Cheltenham Civic Society.
