WOW! Rugby Exhibition to open at Gloucester City Museum
Gloucester City Museum and Art Gallery is set to host its largest exhibition to date starting Saturday 4th July.
‘WOW! Rugby’ featuring fascinating objects from the world of rugby, intriguing facts of figures and an interactive area for children will be held in the museum’s large touring gallery and the second gallery next door.
There will be 40 original oil and charcoal portraits of current and ex-Gloucester rugby players painted by local artist Russell Haines, plus personal collections of ex-international players and previous World Cup winners medals on loan from Phil Vickery and Danielle Waterman.
In addition, Cheltenham College has loaned the museum, what are thought to be some of the earliest known rugby kits still surviving in the world. The curator of the exhibition, David Rice, had the caps acknowledged by the World Rugby Museum at Twickenham.
Cheltenham College was the first place in Gloucestershire to have played the game of ‘rugby’. Rugby Union adopted the Cheltenham College rules, so that the teams won by points, not goals.
Cllr Paul James, leader of Gloucester City Council said, “It is a big year for Gloucester so it is fitting to hold the biggest exhibition to date at the city museum and art gallery. We are excited to have these objects on show here, and we urge everyone to take this opportunity to learn about the history of the sport.”
The exhibition runs until Saturday 31st October, and general museum admission is payable (free to museum members). Prices for adults £5, concessions (children aged 5-17 years and over 60s) £3, and under 5s are free.
