REVIEW: Cable Ski Wakeboarding at Cotswold Water Park
Ok, so you may have a bit of a trek on your hands to get the coast from Gloucestershire, but did you know that we do in fact have a beach resort right here in the Cotswolds where you can enjoy just about all the same activities plus a few more?
Cotswold Country Park and Beach is ideally situated near Cirencester and the Cotswolds with easy access to major roads. The Park is open from February until December with boat hire, water zorbing, bouncy castles, crazy golf, a climbing wall, adventure playgrounds, open water swimming, cafes and wonderful lakeside walks to enjoy.
A warm Wednesday in June proved to be the perfect opportunity for two of us to escape the office and explore this family friendly playground to find out what the Park had to offer.
On arrival it was plain to see that this was a great location for a family day out and those with children of pre-school age were taking advantage of the sunshine and the quieter period before the summer school holiday. The spacious children's playground and paddling area located next to the shop and cafe was a popular choice, with a lifeguard on duty. The main beach was closed to the public that day as a new consignment of sand had been delivered.
There are two lakes in the Park - one with the beach area and the other, where we made our way to, for the cable wakeboarding, paddleboards and open water swimming.
We were greeted by Steve and Charlie at WMSki and they made us feel very welcome from the start. We both looked at the cable ski course complete with jumps in eager anticipation as it's something we've both been wanting to do for quite some time. A quick change into the wet suits, life jackets and helmets and we were ready to start our water sport activity.
Steve took us through a few safety procedures and made sure we were ready and willing to take on the wakeboarding experience. Brief, but very clear instructions were given and into the water we went. Of course I'd love to brag that we both pulled ourselves up and were doing somersaults after speeding over the ramps, but of course to begin with it was more like a quick 'pull up and a dunk!' However, after only about three attempts we both were being pulled along on top of the water and smiling. This was excellent fun and afterwards those ramps didn’t look like a distant dream – just got to book a few more sessions (which we will).
The cable wakeboarding experience is £25 per 15-minute session (£20 off peak Monday – Friday until 5pm excluding all holidays) including wet suit, lifejacket, helmet, board and one-to-one coaching. The price also includes two hours parking.
