May is going to be a busy month. With two bank holidays and a school half
term, there really are some great events happening across Gloucestershire.

May Day Bank holiday sees the return of the Tewkesbury Food and Drink
Festival near the Abbey, and this year’s celebrity TV chef James Martin will be demonstrating his skills on Sunday. On the subject of food, don’t miss out on locally grown fresh asparagus available from Over Farm and Primrose Vale farm shops – there’s nothing quite like it.

Gloucestershire traditionally goes a ‘bit bonkers’ in May with events that
can only amaze. Yes, we’re talking about cheese rolling, woolsack races,
waps, the traditional sport of shin kicking in Robert Dover’s Olimpick Games
and finally St. Briavel’s bread and cheese dole. It’s fantastic that very
‘oldy-woldy’ traditions in Gloucestershire still entertain hundreds of years
later.

If you are an aviation enthusiast you’ll be able to enjoy aeroplanes of a
bygone era. The Kemble Vintage Flying Weekend is a must for all ages. If you
need a bit of time away from the children though, grab some friends and make a
night of it at Howlers Comedy Club, either on 9 May at the Wheatsheaf, or 27
May at the Town Hall - both in Cheltenham.

After many months of anticipation and excitement, the Gloucester Quays
outlet opens this month amid a ten day celebration at the Docks, which sees
Gok Wan officially opening the outlet. The return of the hugely popular Tall
Ships Festival on the last weekend of May, guarantees to be great fun for
all the family with street entertainment in the City centre too. If you
missed out in 2007 it really is a fantastic sight and the kids will love it!

Cheltenham will be hosting the family friendly Wychwood Festival at
Cheltenham Racecourse. This festival continues to grow in popularity
annually, with its fabulous line up including Supergrass and Super Furry
Animals. Weekend and day passes are available.

Finally, for the competition junkies. We have some cracking prizes including family tickets to Kemble Air Show, box Gaymer’s cider sets and tickets to the Cheltenham Food & Drink Festival and a pair of tickets to see top comedians Jarred Christmas and Brendan Dempsey at Howlers at the Hall on 17 June.
