Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum charity launches Young Person Membership

Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum Charity Unveils Young Person Membership
The Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum charity has introduced a new Young Person membership to enhance access to nature and improve the wellbeing of young adults. Targeted at individuals aged 18 to 25, the membership is offered at a special rate of £30, compared to £45 for Single Membership. This discounted rate acknowledges the financial challenges often faced by this age group, including students, and comes just in time for the renowned Autumn Colours season at Westonbirt, The National Arboretum, managed by Forestry England.
The membership donation supports the arboretum's 10-year vision to connect people with trees, fostering an improved quality of life and inspiring younger generations through conservation, education, and participation. Members receive a variety of benefits, recognising their vital role as advocates for Westonbirt Arboretum.

Stimulate your mind - breath in the fresh air at Westonbirt Arbretum
Emma Griffiths, CEO of Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum, said:
“This initiative provides an opportunity for younger people to access nature, while also promoting mental wellbeing. It offers the chance to explore the great outdoors, disconnect from technology, and escape the pressures of modern life, all in a more affordable way. At the same time, they’ll be supporting our ongoing work, ensuring the arboretum continues to flourish and address global environmental challenges. We aim to give as many people as possible the chance to experience the profound connection with trees and its positive impact on health and wellbeing.”
Research demonstrates that spending time in nature significantly benefits both mental and physical wellbeing. Exposure to green spaces is linked to improved mood, reduced stress and anger, as well as enhanced confidence and self-esteem. Fresh air encourages physical activity and offers the opportunity for social connection.

This initiative arrives at a critical time, with growing concern over young people’s mental health in the UK. According to NHS England’s annual report on the Mental Health of Children and Young People in England, 23.3% of 17 to 19-year-olds were found to have a probable mental disorder in 2023, with the figure at 21.7% for 20 to 25-year-olds. The study also highlighted financial barriers to participation in activities such as sports, days out, or socialising, which are more prevalent in young people with probable mental disorders. Additionally, 54.8% of 17 to 25-year-olds expressed concern over climate change.
In response, Westonbirt has refined its approach, ensuring that its tree collection better supports the aspirations and interests of young people. A collaborative research project with Bedgebury National Pinetum highlighted key recommendations, including increasing young people’s representation in decision-making, addressing their environmental concerns, and enhancing support for their wellbeing. The Young Person membership aims to address barriers to participation that young adults face.

Westonbirt Arbretum is the ideal escape from the hustle and bustle of modern day life
Members of Friends of Westonbirt Arboretum benefit from free, year-round entry, discounted access to partner gardens, free educational events and activities, Early Bird booking for Forest Live concerts and Christmas at Westonbirt, and free event parking for one car (worth £8).
Membership can be applied for online or onsite at Westonbirt Arboretum, with instant email confirmation upon registration.
