End of an Era: The Warehouse Climbing Centre in Gloucester is Closing
End-of-an-Era for Gloucester Climbing Company as Time Comes to Move Onwards & Upwards
After 30 years of trading and scaling the walls, The Warehouse Climbing Centre in Gloucester has announced it is set to close its doors at the end of November.
During its 30 years, The Warehouse has been an ever-popular venue for adventure seekers of all ages and abilities. From children and adults learning the ropes for the very first time to established climbers scaling the walls, the centre has seen hundreds of thousands of people reach new heights.
Climbing has seen a huge growth in popularity in recent years, most recently helped by Team GB’s success at the Paris Olympics, and the indoor climbing industry has changed beyond recognition since The Warehouse opened. When the centre opened, it was just the fifth dedicated climbing centre in the UK – today there are well over 100!
Robert Stevens, Director at 270 Climbing Park and one of the owners of The Warehouse, says “So many people from Gloucestershire and further afield have fond memories of climbing at The Warehouse. We are incredibly proud of our heritage and all that’s been accomplished over the last 30 years – it’s been pretty special. But with little space to grow the business or develop the facilities, the time has come to move on, however, we’re incredibly excited about what lays ahead with the new company, 270 Climbing.”
The next phase at of the £7m project at 270 Climbing Park begins in December 2024
The future looks very promising for climbers and vertical enthusiasts in the region with the exciting news that the second phase of a £7m project is set to open at 270 Climbing Park in Bentham on Friday, 6th December.
Robert continues, “The new bouldering gym is over five times the footprint of The Warehouse. Visitors will be able to enjoy a range of dynamic walls up to 4.5m high, including over 1,000m² of indoor and outdoor surfaces. Alongside this, the centre is also home to our dedicated Fun Walls climbing area. This brand-new attraction for the region features a series of crazy and colourful climbing challenges for children and beginners. Away from the action, we also have our large welcoming café bar so we’ll offer something for everyone – from passersby, families on a day out to professional athletes aiming for Olympic medals.”
Robert adds, “Our aim is to offer a range of aerial activities at the Park. Phase One back in 2023 saw the installation of our high ropes course which is one of the biggest in Europe. Phase Two sees the opening of the Bouldering and Fun Walls in December. Phase Three, set for Spring 2025, will see the opening of our 17m high roped Climbing Gym, all of which means 270 will provide one of the most comprehensive climbing facilities in the country. The park will offer something of a unique destination to the region. We look forward to welcoming a new generation of climbers and helping to create many more memorable experiences.”
