Beatrix Potter and the Tailor of Gloucester

In celebration of Beatrix Potter’s 150th birthday The Everyman Theatre Company, along with 40 local singers, musicians and community actors, bring her favourite story to glorious life on stage...
The Everyman Theatre, Cheltenham is staging a brand new family musical based on the famous Gloucestershire story of the old tailor, his cat and the mice.
The Everyman’s production, which premieres in August, commemorates 150 years since the birth of Beatrix Potter. It not only brings to life the magical tale of Beatrix Potter’s own personal favourite, The Tailor of Gloucester, but also recounts how she came to write the story whilst staying with friends in nearby Painswick.
Beatrix Potter was not only an artist and a storyteller but also a botanist, environmentalist, farmer, impeccable businesswoman, a visionary and a trailblazer. Single-mindedly determined and ambitious, she overcame professional rejection, academic humiliation and personal heartbreak, going on to earn her fortune and a formidable reputation. On her death she left a legacy of land and property to the care of The National Trust to ensure that future generations would continue to enjoy the countryside that she was so passionate about, as well as the much-loved characters and stories that were created over a lifetime and which are still enjoyed by millions worldwide today. One Beatrix Potter book is sold somewhere in the world every 15 seconds and over 2 million of her ‘little books’ are sold globally every year.
The Everyman’s show is being adapted and directed by the Theatre’s Creative Director Paul Milton. Set and costumes are being designed by Phil R Daniels and Charles Cusick Smith. Original music is being composed by Peter Banks, and the Ensemble Singers will be led by Caroline Mander, who runs the Everyman’s Everyvoice choirs. The leading parts will be played by professional performers and the ensemble cast is made up of local singers and actors.
Director Paul Milton said: “There probably won’t be a bigger production in the country to celebrate Beatrix Potter’s 150th anniversary than the Everyman’s adaptation of The Tailor of Gloucester, which was actually Beatrix’s favourite book. It will feature about 40 non-professional actors, singers and dancers, alongside a professional cast of actors. The show will be a musical version of the story, suitable for all the family.”
